SALUQIS TO TAKE ON TOP-RANKED CHIPOLA

The Southwest men’s basketball team, off to its best start since the 1999-2000 season with an 11-2 overall record, will play the nation’s top-ranked team in Chipola Junior College in the first round of the Penacola Collegiate Sports Travel Shootout at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, December 30. The Saluqis will take on the host school, Pensacola Junior College, in the second round game at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 31.

The Saluqis, coached by Verties Sails, rank third in the nation in scoring at 99.8 points per game and are led by three players who made the TJCCAA’s All-Western Division team as freshmen. Lester Hudson is averaging a team-high 15.1 points per game, while Anthony Pigram (14.2) and Moraye Ivy (13.3) are also scoring in double figures.

Other top contributors so far this season for Southwest are Greg Grimes (9.7 points, team-leading 6.6 rebounds), Donald Boone (8.5 points, 4.8 rebounds), Chris Evans (7.4 points, 5.5 rebounds), Anthony Barbee (6.0 points), Darius Simmons (5.9 points, 4.7 rebounds), and Nathan Walton (4.1 assists).
