SOUTHWEST MEN DEFEAT 16TH-RANKED SAINT
CATHARINE
Moraye
Ivy’s three-point field goal with 3.5 seconds remaining in overtime gave the
Southwest men’s basketball team an 89-86 win over 16th-ranked Saint
Catharine College on Saturday afternoon in Saint Catharine, Kentucky. Ivy
(pictured at right) led the Saluqis with 20 points and five steals,
while Anthony Pigram added 19 points and three steals.
Southwest led 45-44 at the half, but trailed by as many as ten points in the
second half after making only 1 of its first 19 shots after the halftime
break. However, the Saluqis got back in the game midway through the second
half, sparked by the play of Pigram, who came off the bench to make three
straight from the behind the three-point arc. Pigram, who has signed to play
next season at Tennessee State University, scored 13 of his 19 points in the
second half and overtime.
Also scoring in double figures for Southwest were Donald Boone and Chris
Evans with 12 points each. Lester Hudson, who is the team’s leading scorer
on the season, scored only nine points but led the team with 12 rebounds.
The win improved the Saluqis’ record to 7-1 on the season and 5-1 in the
Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association. The victory
over Saint Catharine was the second over a ranked team this season.
Southwest also defeated then 16th-ranked Walters State in the fourth game of
the season.
Tameka
Wooten (pictured at left) (18 points) and Priscilla Campbell (17
points) each scored season highs but it wasn’t enough as the Southwest women
lost 80-78 to Saint Catharine. Wooten also led the Lady Saluqis with six
assists and three steals. Other players who scored in double figures for
Southwest were sophomore Imesia Jackson (12 points, 12 rebounds) and Jasmine
Massey (11 points). The loss dropped the Lady Saluqis’ record to 3-5 overall
and 2-4 in the TJCCAA.
On Wednesday night, December 7, the Southwest basketball teams will travel
to Dyersburg, Tennessee to take on Dyersburg State Community College. The
