SALUQIS SWEEP VOL

Both the Southwest men's and women's basketball teams defeated Volunteer State Community College Saturday afternoon in Gallatin, Tennessee with the Lady Saluqis winning 93-81, and the Saluqi men defeating Vol by a 93-70 score.

In the women's game, Kaia Richardson had her best game of the season with 20 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. Tiffany Webb added a game-high 23 points (including 21 in the second half) and Christhol McClain scored 22 points. It was the first time all year that three Lady Saluqis scored at least 20 points in the same game. On Tuesday night, McClain scored a career-high 28 points and Richardson added 23 points and 14 rebounds in a 107-101 loss to Saint Catharine. The Lady Saluqis now stand at 9-12 overall and 3-9 in the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association.

The Saluqis outscored Vol 53-33 in the second half, breaking open a close game at the half. For the game, Southwest shot 54 percent from the field, compared to just 38 percent for Vol, and outrebounded the Pioneers by a 48-31 margin. Five Saluqis scored in double figures, led by Toriano Stokes with 19 points, Albert Jones with 17, and Zach Bright with 16. In addition, point guard Brian Kizzie handed out 14 assists, a career-high. Earlier in the week, Kizzie recorded another career-high with 31 points to lead the Saluqis past Saint Catharine College 114-85. With the two wins, the Saluqis improve to 17-6 overall and 11-2 in the TJCCAA.


HOMECOMING GAME THIS THURSDAY


The Saluqis and Lady Saluqis return to action this Thursday night in Southwest's Homecoming Game against Jackson State Community College. Tip-off for the women's game is set for 6:00 p.m., followed by the men at 8:00. All students, faculty, and staff are admitted free to Saluqis' basketball games, so come out and support our basketball teams and celebrate homecoming this Thursday night at the Verties Sails Gymnasium (on the Union Campus.)  Play-by-play for both games can be heard locally on WUMR FM 91.7.
