SOUTHWEST BASKETBALL TEAMS HOST VOL STATE IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE
The Southwest men’s and women’s basketball teams will wrap up the
regular season this Saturday, February 26, when the Saluqis and Lady
Saluqis host Volunteer State Community College at the Verties Sails
Gymnasium. Game times are 2 p.m. for the women, followed by the men at 4
p.m.
The Saluqis, coached by Verties Sails Jr., enter Saturday’s game
ranked 17th nationally with 19-5 overall record and a 13-2 record in
the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association. The
Southwest men have clinched first place in the Western Division of the
TJCCAA and will have a first round bye in the Region VII Tournament,
March 8-13 in Harriman, Tennessee.
Four
Southwest men’s players average at least ten points per game, led by
sophomore forward Rasuul Buluu, who averages 18.1 points per game and
also leads the team in rebounding with a 8.0 average. The second leading
scorer is freshman guard Anthony “A.J.” Pigram (pictured at right)(Trezevant
High School), who averages 14.7 points per game and also leads the team
with 81 three point field goals made. Other players in double figures
are freshman guard Lester Hudson (Central High School) at 13.0 points
per game, and freshman forward Moraye Ivy (Central High School) at 10.0
points per game.
The Southwest women, coached by Andrea Martre, are 16-8 overall and in
first place in the TJCCAA’s Western Division with a 9-6 record. The Lady
Saluqis have clinched at least a tie for first place in the division.
The
Lady Saluqis also have four players with double figure scoring averages.
Leading the team is sophomore forward Ashley Mason (pictured at left)
(Trezevant High School), who averages 14.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per
game. Other Southwest women averaging at least ten points per game are
freshman guard/forward Kenya Moore (Blytheville, AR), who is second on
the team with a 12.6 average, freshman forward Imesia Jackson (Crawford,
MS), who averages 11.5 points and leads the team with a 7.8 rebounding
average, and sophomore guard Lakeisha Jackson (Booker T. Washington High
School), who averages 11.2 points per game.
