BOTH SOUTHWEST BASKETBALL TEAMS HIT CENTURY
MARK IN SWEEP OF DYERSBURG STATE
The Southwest basketball teams continued their excellent play with a men’s
and women’s doubleheader sweep of Dyersburg State Community College on
Saturday afternoon at the Verties Sails Gymnasium.
In
the women’s game, seven Lady Saluqis’ players scored in double figures as
Southwest trounced Dyersburg State 104-63. Point guard Porshia Willis
(pictured at right) dished out a career-high 17 assists, only three shy
of the College’s single game record of 20 set by Dorothy Hoskins during the
1981-82 season. Top scorers for the Lady Saluqis were Gina High (18), Imesia
Jackson (16), Tameka Wooten (15), Willis (13), Jasmine Massey (12), Michelle
Malone (12) and Tonya Walker (12), who also led all rebounders with 12. The
win improved the Lady Saluqis’ record to 14-7 overall and 11-6 in the
Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association.
Anthony
Pigram (pictured at left) scored 24 points and Donald Boone added 19
to lead the 12th-ranked Southwest men to a 122-73 rout of Dyersburg State.
Fourteen Saluqis’ players scored in the game, including five in double
figures. Other top scorers for Southwest were Lester Hudson (14), Darius
Simmons (12), and Moraye Ivy (11). The Saluqis turned in another terrific
defensive effort, limiting Dyersburg State to only 34 percent field goal
shooting and forcing 37 turnovers. The Southwest men improved their record
to 18-3 overall and 15-2 in the TJCCAA.
Southwest returns to action this Saturday, February 11 with a road trip to
Gallatin, Tennessee to take on Volunteer State Community College. The
women’s game will tip-off at 2 p.m. followed by the men at 4 p.m.
Play-by-play for both games will be broadcast locally on WUMR 91.7 FM.
