SOUTHWEST BASKETBALL
TEAMS TOP SEEDS IN TJCCAA TOURNEY
Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams from
Southwest have earned top seeds and first round byes in
this week’s
TJCCAA/NJCAA Region VII tournament at Volunteer
State in Gallatin, Tennessee. The Lady Saluqis will play
at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 8 against the winner of the
Eastern Division number four seed (Cleveland State) vs.
Western Division number five seed (Dyersburg State). The
men will play at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 9, also against
the winner of Eastern Division four seed (Walters State)
vs. Western Division five seed (Jackson State).
Semifinal games will be on Saturday, March 10 at 2 p.m.
(women) and 6 p.m. (men) with the championship games on
Sunday, March 11 at 2 p.m. (women) and 4 p.m. (men).
The
13th-ranked Lady Saluqis, coached by Andrea Martre,
enter the tournament with a 25-1 overall record and were
regular season Western Division champions with a 15-1
record. Leading the Lady Saluqis is sophomore guard
Ashley Shields (pictured at right),
who leads the nation in scoring at 25.9 points per game
and is also ranked among NJCAA leaders in rebounds
(11.1), assists (6.6), and steals (4.1). Other top
scorers are sophomore guards Jasmine Massey (8.5),
Tameka Wooten (7.7) and Gina High (6.2), sophomore
forward Brittany Smith (6.7) and freshman forward Keona
Brooks (6.7).
Coach
Verties Sails’ men’s team finished the regular season
with a 23-5 overall record and are
ranked 16th in the NJCAA. The Saluqis were also
Western Division champions with a 14-2 record in the
TJCCAA. Four players average in double figures:
sophomore guard Donald Boone (pictured at left)
(16.3), sophomore forward Greg Grimes (11.5), freshman
guard A.J. Nance (11.2), and freshman center Deante
Burges (10.1). Boone also leads the team in rebounding
with a 6.7 average while sophomore point guard James
Hooper leads the team and is among conference leaders
with 6.2 assists per game.
Tournament champions will represent the TJCCAA and
Region VII in the NJCAA National Tournament on March
20-24. The women’s tournament will be in Salina, Kansas
and the men’s in Hutchinson, Kansas.
