BOONE NAMED TJCCAA PLAYER OF THE YEAR, SAILS COACH OF
THE YEAR
Southwest
sophomore guard Donald Boone has been selected as Player
of the Year in the Tennessee Junior and Community
College Athletic Association by a vote of coaches.
Boone led Southwest in scoring (16.6), rebounding (6.8)
and field goal percentage (.541) this season. He posted
season highs of 25 points (vs. Coahoma, Cleveland State,
and Shorter) and had three double-doubles (vs. Coahoma,
Kennedy-King, and Walters State).
Coach
Verties Sails was named Western Division and TJCCAA
Coach of the Year after guiding Southwest to a 25-5
record, the Western Division championship, and a number
16 national ranking this season. It was the 11th time
and third straight year Sails has been honored as
conference coach of the year.
Sophomore guard Nathan Walton and freshman forward A.J.
Nance were named to the All-Western Division team.
Walton averaged 9.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.2
assists while Nance was second on the team with an 11.7
scoring average and led the Saluqis with a .782 free
throw percentage.
SHIELDS NAMED TJCCAA PLAYER OF THE YEAR, MARTRE COACH
OF THE YEAR
Southwest
sophomore guard Ashley Shields has been named Player of
the Year in the Tennessee Junior and Community College
Athletic Association by a unanimous vote of the coaches.
In Southwest’s TJCCAA/NJCAA Region VII Tournament
quarterfinal win over Cleveland State last Thursday,
Shields poured in a NJCAA record 65
points and also set new school single game records for
22 field goals made, 20 free throws made and 25 free
throws attempted.
Shields led the NJCAA in scoring this season with an
average of 27.4 points per game and was among national
leaders in rebounding (11.3), assists (6.6) and steals
(4.1). She also led the Lady Saluqis in field goal
percentage (.558), and three-point percentage (.443).
She recorded four triple-doubles and 19 double-doubles
this season and had season highs of 15 rebounds (vs.
Arkansas Baptist, Hiwassee, and Saint Catharine), 14
assists (vs. Jackson State), eight steals (vs. Cleveland
State), and four blocked shots (vs. Hiwassee).
Coach
Andrea Martre was named Western Division and TJCCAA
Coach of the Year after guiding Southwest to a 26-2
record, the Western Division championship, and a number
13 national ranking this season. It was the third time
Martre has been honored as coach of the year by the
TJCCAA. In eleven years as coach at Southwest, Martre
has compiled a 178-120 record.
Sophomore guards Jasmine Massey and Tameka Wooten were
also honored. Wooten was named All-Western Division and
All-TJCCAA after averaging 7.4 points per game and
leading the Lady Saluqis with a .839 free throw
percentage. Massey, who averaged 8.1 points per game and
led the Lady Saluqis with 61 three-point field goals
made, was selected to the All-Western Division team.
