The Southwest
Tennessee Community College men's and women's basketball teams travel to
Jackson, Tennessee Thursday night to take on Jackson State Community
College, with the women's game beginning at 6:00 p.m. followed by the
men at 8:00 p.m.
Southwest men's coach Verties Sails will go for his
500th career victory against Jackson State, a team ranked 15th
nationally with a 20-2 overall record. The Saluqis (12-11 overall and
6-6 in the TJCCAA) are led by sophomore forward Cortez Stigger, who
leads the team in scoring (22.1), rebounding (8.0), assists (3.8),
steals (1.8), and three-point field goals (58). Also averaging in double
figures for the Saluqis are sophomores Lou Wright (13.9 points per game)
and Larry Wells (11.4), and freshmen Antwon Bess (10.4) and Zachary
Bright (10.2).
The Lady Saluqis, coached by Andrea Martre, are
currently 9-13 overall and 5-7 in the conference. Winners of five of
their last six games, the Southwest women are led by sophomores Latoshia
Bailey and Torre Thomas. Bailey leads the team in scoring (13.8),
rebounding (10.0), and blocked shots (4.9), while Thomas averages 12.5
points per game and is the team leader in assists (5.7) and steals
(2.8). Sophomore Larica Seals adds 10.8 points per game and is second on
the team in rebounding with a 9.1 average.
The Saluqis and Lady Saluqis will play Columbia
State Community College this Saturday in the home finale of the
2001-2002 season. Game times will be 2:00 p.m. for the women, and 4:00
p.m. for the men. Following Saturday's games, Southwest will travel to St.
Catharine (KY) and Volunteer State next weekend to finish the regular
season before travelling to Madisonville, Tennessee for the TJCCAA/Region
7 Tournament March 5-10.
