The Southwest
Tennessee Community College men's and women's basketball teams host
Dyersburg State Community College Tuesday night at the Verties Sails
Gymnasium on the Union Campus. The women's game will begin at 6:00
p.m., followed by the men at 8:00 p.m.
Saluqis' coach Verties Sails will be seeking his
499th career victory over 23 seasons at Shelby State and Southwest. The
Saluqis, coming off losses to Jackson State and Columbia State last
week, are now 11-10 overall and 5-5 in the Tennessee Junior/Community
College Athletic Association.
Sophomore forward Cortez Stigger leads the team
in several statistical categories, including scoring (22.8 points per
game), rebounding (8.3), assists (3.8), and steals (1.9). Also
averaging in double figures for the Saluqis are sophomore forward Lou
Wright (14.8), sophomore guard Larry Wells (10.5), freshman guard
Antwon Bess (10.3), and freshman center Zachary Bright (10.1).
The Lady Saluqis saw their three-game winning
streak end on Saturday, losing at Columbia State. Coach Andrea
Martre's team is currently 7-13 overall and 3-7 in TJCCAA play.
Sophomore center Latoshia Bailey leads the Lady Saluqis in scoring at
13.9 points per game and also ranks among the conference leaders in
rebounding (9.8), and blocked shots (4.7). Sophomore guard Torre
Thomas adds 12.1 points per game and leads the team in assists (5.6)
and steals (2.9).
When Southwest played at Dyersburg State on January
22, the Saluqis exploded for 72 second half points, defeating the
Eagles 124-93. Cortez Stigger led the team with 28 points and 12
rebounds, and Larry Wells added 17 points (15 in the second half). The
Lady Saluqis also defeated Dyersburg State, 64-54, as Latoshia Bailey
nearly had a triple-double with 18 points, 13 rebounds, and nine
blocked shots.
Southwest's Homecoming Game will be this Saturday
night as the Saluqis and Lady Saluqis take on St. Catharine College at
the Verties Sails Gymnasium. The women's game gets underway at 6:00
p.m., with the men following at 8:00 p.m.
