The Southwest men's basketball team defeated Volunteer State Community College 68-66 on Monday night to win the TJCCAA/Region VII Tournament at Oman Arena in Jackson, Tennessee. The 20th-ranked Saluqis, now 23-6 on the season, will advance to next week's National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas. It will be the seventh trip to the nationals for coach Verties Sails in his 24 years as the Saluqis' head coach.

Freshman forward Eric Christopher hit two free throws with 31 seconds remaining to put the Saluqis up 67-66, then with three seconds left, Chris Adams made one free throw to give the Saluqis a two-point lead. Sophomore forward Albert Jones then stole the inbounds pass to seal the victory, and a trip to Kansas for the fourth time in the last six seasons. Sophomore center Zach Bright led Southwest with 14 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore guard Ben Mitchum added 12 points. Both Bright and Mitchum were named to the all-tournament team, as was sophomore point guard Brian Kizzie, who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
