LADY SALUQIS SOFTBALL TEAM SWEEPS RHODES
The Southwest softball team swept Rhodes College 4-2
and 2-1 in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Rhodes. In game one, the Lady Saluqis scored three runs in the third inning, two of
them coming on a double by freshman Whitney Witcher.
Freshman Maegan Wilson was the winning pitcher, allowing
only five hits and no walks in seven innings.
In the second game, Southwest fell behind 1-0 in the top
of the fourth, then tied the game in the bottom of the
inning when sophomore Staci Craig doubled off the left
field fence and later scored on a single by Wilson. The
Lady Saluqis took a 2-1 lead in the next inning when
freshman Lindsey Byram led off with a single, stole
second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored
on an error. Craig was the winning pitcher, allowing
five hits and striking out five (including the final
three batters of the game in the seventh inning.)
Top hitters on the day for the Lady Saluqis were Witcher
(two hits, double, two RBI) freshman Beth Bellard (two
hits, double), and freshman Amber Gatewood (two hits).
In addition, the Southwest defense was outstanding all day, committing only
one error in the two games and turning a double play in game two.
