SOUTHWEST SOFTBALL OPENS SEASON
The Southwest softball team will open the 2008 season
with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, February 15 in
Moorhead, Mississippi against Mississippi Delta
Community College. The Lady Saluqis were originally
scheduled to begin the season at Williams Baptist
College on Monday, February 11. However, that
doubleheader has been rescheduled for next Monday,
February 18. With six returning players and eight new
faces on the team this season, the Southwest softball
team is looking to improve a great deal on last year’s
15-24 record.
Staci Craig, who led the
pitching staff with 10 wins, 119 strikeouts and a 2.92 earned run
average, is back for her sophomore season after receiving TJCCAA
All-Western Division honors as a freshman. Craig was also one of the
team’s top hitters with a .382 batting average and will see action
in the outfield when not pitching. Infielders
Alyse Brewer (.386, 20
RBI) and Amanda Harlow
(.245, 23 RBI) and outfielder
Brooke Hively (.319, 22
stolen bases) are back as well. In addition, sophomore catcher
Courtney LeBlanc and
sophomore third baseman
Lindsey McGoff return to the team after sitting out the 2007
season.
These six sophomores are joined by an impressive group of incoming
freshmen. Whitney Witcher
(Stuttgart, AR), who led the team in hitting during the fall season,
will see playing time at catcher, third base, and outfield.
Maegan Wilson (Munford)
led the team in wins, strikeouts, and ERA in the fall and will join
Craig on the Lady Saluqis’ pitching staff. Other freshmen on the
team, all expected to see significant playing time, are outfielders
Amber Gatewood
(Brighton), Jackie Lloyd
(Munford), and Beth
Bellard (First Assembly Christian), and infielders
Carly McLennan
(Munford), Whitney Grimes
(Jacksonville, AR), and
Ashley Frizzell (Covington).
