SOUTHWEST SOFTBALL TEAM OPENS SEASON WITH EXHIBITION GAME
The Southwest softball team, coming off a record-breaking season in 2005
in which the Lady Saluqis won 25 games and advanced to the Region VII
tournament, will take on Rhodes College in an exhibition game at 5 p.m. on
Wednesday, February 15 at the Buckhead Creek Recreational Complex on Highway
70 (just off Germantown Parkway.)
Southwest,
under the direction of third-year coaches Keith Gentry and Tonya Shropshire,
returns three players off last year’s squad. Pitcher/infielder Erica Brich
(pictured at right) (Collierville High School), who was named to the
TJCCAA All-Western Division Team as a freshman, set school records with 10
wins, 132 strikeouts, and a 2.32 earned run average. Also back are pitcher
Allison Mullins (Marion High School), who started 11 games last year and
struck out 39 batters, and first baseman Jennifer Davenport (Houston High
School), who batted .259 and also led the team with a .980 fielding average.
In addition, the Lady Saluqis return two players who were red-shirted last
year – catcher/third baseman Anna Carter (White Station High School) and
pitcher/outfielder Caryn Hubbard (Central High School).
Newcomers to the Southwest softball program this season are sophomore
catcher/outfielder Ashley Forrest, who transferred to Southwest after
playing at Jackson State Community College in 2005, and the following
freshmen: infielders Jessica Hefflinger (Bolton High School), Gina High
(Bartlett High School), and Lindsey McGoff (St. Benedict at Auburndale High
School), outfielders Carrie Byram (Munford High School) and Kara Hammer
(Aurora, Colorado), and second baseman/outfielder Tonesha Webb (Byhalia High
School).
The Lady Saluqis will play a second exhibition game at Rhodes College at
3:30 p.m. on Monday, February 20 before opening the regular season on
Wednesday, February 22 against East Mississippi Community College in a 2
p.m. doubleheader at Buckhead.
