LADY SALUQIS SOFTBALL TEAM SPLITS WITH SOUTHEASTERN ILLINOIS
After rain outs on Wednesday and Thursday last week, the Southwest
softball team finally got back on the field over the weekend, splitting
a doubleheader with Southeastern Illinois College on Sunday afternoon at
the Appling Complex. Southwest won the first game 8-6 and lost the
nightcap 15-4. The split evens the Lady Saluqis record at 2-2 on the
season.
In
game one, the Lady Saluqis fell behind 6-1 early, but came back to score
seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 8-6 lead. Top
hitters for Southwest in game one were shortstop Jessica Laubacker
(pictured at left), who went 2 for 3 and drove in one run, and
catcher Tiffany Bright, whose two-run single highlighted the seven-run
fourth inning. Starting pitcher Katie Cerrito picked up the win, going
four innings and allowing one earned run. Freshman Erica Brich pitched
three scoreless innings and struck out five batters to earn the save.
The Southwest softball team has a busy week ahead with six games
scheduled in the next four days. The Lady Saluqis will host Crowley’s
Ridge College on Monday, February 28 in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the
Appling Complex. This game is a make-up game which was originally
scheduled for last Thursday. The Lady Saluqis will play road games on
Wednesday, March 2 at 2 p.m. at Northwest Mississippi Community College
(Senatobia, MS) and on Thursday, March 3 at 3 p.m. at Northwest-Shoals
Community College (Muscle Shoals, AL).
