SOUTHWEST SOFTBALL TEAM LOSES TO COLUMBIA AND VOL
The Southwest softball team dropped two doubleheaders on the road last
weekend, losing at Columbia State (4-0 and 11-1) Saturday and Volunteer
State (6-0 and 8-0) Sunday. In Saturday’s first game, Southwest and Columbia
State were scoreless through six innings before Columbia State scored four
runs in the bottom of the sixth to win the game 4-0. Both Southwest pitchers
had outstanding games, limiting Columbia State to just three hits through
the first six innings. Starter Katie Cerrito pitched three shutout innings
before leaving the game after she was hit by a pitch. Ginny Glenn took over
in the fourth and shut out Columbia over the next two innings. Two infield
hits, a questionable call by the umpire, and a costly error led to the
Columbia State runs. The Lady Saluqis had the same number of hits (7) as
Columbia State, but left 10 runners on base compared to only three for the
host team. The game marked the return of shortstop Chrissy Odom, who had
been injured since March 15. In the two Columbia State games, Odom had three
hits and one sacrifice bunt. Other Lady Saluqis with multiple hits in the
Columbia State doubleheader were Ginny Glenn (3 hits), Jessica Laubacker (2
hits), Heather Bryant (2 hits), Kacie Adams (2 hits), and Ginny Galloway (2
hits). In addition, Laubacker had two hits, including a double against
Volunteer State; while Megan Young also had a two-base hit.
The Lady Saluqis will host Dyersburg State on Tuesday, April 27, making up a
game that was rained out last Wednesday. The doubleheader will begin at 4:30
p.m. and will be played at Ellendale Park because of scheduling conflicts at
the Appling Complex. Southwest will then travel to Dyersburg State Thursday
for a 3 p.m. doubleheader before returning home on Sunday, May 2, to play
Volunteer State in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the Appling Complex. |
