SOUTHWEST SOFTBALL TEAM WINS THREE OF FOUR
The Lady Saluqis softball team won three of four
conference games over the weekend, improving their
record to 17-16 overall and 5-3 in the Tennessee Junior
and Community College Athletic Association.
Southwest split a doubleheader with Cleveland State on
Saturday, winning the first game 3-1 and losing game two
2-0. On Sunday, the Lady Saluqis defeated Hiwassee 5-2
and 3-1.
In the third inning of game one against Cleveland State,
Beth Bellard, Courtney LeBlanc, Whitney Grimes, and
Alyse Brewer all singled with Brewer driving in Bellard
with the first run of the game. The Lady Saluqis added
two more runs in the fifth inning when Staci Craig led
off with a double, Amber Gatewood walked, then both
players scored on a throwing error, making the score
3-0. Craig was the winning pitcher, allowing only two
hits and no earned runs.
On the day, the Lady Saluqis pounded out 22 hits in the
two game sweep of Hiwassee. Top hitters for Southwest
against Hiwassee were Whitney Witcher (4 hits, 2
doubles, 3 RBI), Carly McLennan (3 hits, double), Brewer
(3 hits, RBI), Bellard (3 hits), Craig (2 doubles), and
Jackie Lloyd (2 hits). Craig scattered seven hits and
struck out eight to pick up the win in game one while
Maegan Wilson gave up only three hits and no earned runs
to earn the game two pitching victory.
