SWEPT BY VOL
The Southwest softball team played six games during the past week,
including four at the Appling Complex, splitting doubleheaders with
Shawnee and Dyersburg State and losing two games to nationally-ranked
Volunteer State. The Lady Saluqis’ record now stands at 22-32 overall
heading into the final week of the regular season.
Last Monday, Southwest wrapped up a two-day road trip against Shawnee
Community College in Ullin, Illinois. The Lady Saluqis won the first
game 4-3 as Christi Morrison went 3 for 3 and drove in the team’s first
two runs of the game. Morrison also scored the go-ahead run in the sixth
after leading off the inning with a base hit and later scoring on a
single by Ginny Galloway. The winning pitcher was Katie Cerrito, who
scattered seven hits over seven innings. Southwest lost the second game
by an identical 4-3 score.
The
Lady Saluqis hosted Dyersburg State last Thursday at the Appling
Complex, and came away with a split. After losing the first game 2-0,
Southwest came back to take game two 2-1 as Tiffany Bright (pictured

give the Lady Saluqis the lead. Erica Brich was the winning pitcher,
allowing six hits, one run, and striking out four in the seven inning
game.
On Sunday, Southwest hosted Volunteer State in the final home game of
the season for eight sophomores. The Lady Saluqis were defeated in both
games by scores of 7-1 and 9-0 by Volunteer State, the 14th-ranked team
in the country according to the National Junior College Athletic
Association.
Southwest has road games this week at Dyersburg State on Monday, May 2
and at Jackson State on Tuesday, May 3 with games beginning at 2 p.m.
