LADY SALUQIS OPEN FALL SEASON WITH WIN

Led by a pair of freshmen from Tipton County, the Southwest softball team opened the 2007 fall season with a 5-0 victory over Alabama Southern last Saturday afternoon at the Lady Charger Classic in Columbia, Tennessee.  Maegan Wilson (Munford High School) tossed a one-hit shutout and shortstop/centerfielder Amber Gatewood (Brighton High School) went 2 for 2 with a double and two runs batted in to lead the Lady Saluqis.

Southwest lost its next two games in the classic, 9-3 to Northwest-Shoals (AL) and 6-0 to nationally-ranked Wallace State (AL).

In addition to Gatewood, who had four hits in the three games, other top hitters for the Lady Saluqis on the day were sophomore pitcher/centerfielder Staci Craig (3 hits, double, 2 RBI), freshman outfielder Beth Bellard (2 hits, 1 RBI), freshman infielder Alyse Brewer (2 hits), and Wilson (2 hits).

The Southwest softball team returns to action this Friday when the Lady Saluqis take on Lambuth University in a 2 p.m. doubleheader in Jackson, Tennessee.
