played for coach Skip Blythe at Cordova High School, where he was a two-time
All-District 14AAA performer. His senior year, Mathews posted a 4-4 record
with a 2.94 earned run average. In 50 innings of work, he struck out 47
batters and allowed opponents to bat only .230 against him. Following his
senior season, Mathews was selected to play in the City-County All-Star
Game. As a junior, Mathews was also named All-Metro and was Cordova’s
Pitcher of the Year. In 52-1/3 innings, he compiled a 5-2 record with a
1.61 ERA and 58 strikeouts, and a .177 opponent’s batting average.
