Derrick
Grimes, a 2005 Amateur Softball Association of America Hall of Fame
nominee with over 20 years experience, is in his second season as
assistant coach for the Lady Saluqis. Grimes assisted leading Southwest
to a conference record of 10-6 and an overall finish of 40-19. 2009 was
a record setting year for the Lady Saluqis.
Grimes
has coached the Cole Minnows summer ball team and has led the Minnows to
five world championship titles, four national championship titles, and
15 state championship titles. In his coaching career, Grimes has
achieved an overall winning record of 798-128 with one undefeated season
of 70-0. In 2008, Grimes coached the Minnows to a third place finish in
the ASA/USA 18 and under National Championship which was a first for any
Arkansas team.
Grimes
was previously an assistant coach at Jacksonville (AR) High School,
where he helped lead the Lady Red Devils to four conference titles, five
state tournament appearances, two final eight finishes, and three final
four finishes. Grimes, is also a softball instructor in Maumelle,
Arkansas, where he gives one-on-one instruction to over 50 students. He
teaches proper mechanics for hitting, fielding, throwing, catching and
defensive position play. Grimes believes that proper fundamentals lay
the groundwork for success. Grimes has conducted many individual and
team camps and has over ten years experience in promoting and assisting
in the growth of youth summer softball programs. His coaching
philosophy is based on setting goals and possessing a strong work ethic
to obtain them.
A
graduate of North Little Rock High School, Grimes attended Henderson
State University for four years where he was a member of the baseball
team. Grimes also attended Garland County Community College in Hot
Spring, Arkansas, where he received an Associate’s Degree in Fire
Science and a certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. In
addition, Grimes attended Cooper Institute in Dallas, Texas where he
became certified as a Physical Fitness Personal Trainer in 2005. He is
also a third degree Black Belt in Taekwondo.
Grimes
and his wife Janie have been married 24 years and have three daughters –
Somer, Whitney, and Nikki, and three grandchildren – Tristan, Carter,
and Derrick. |
