Now in her twelfth year as the Lady Saluqis'
head coach, Andrea Martre has compiled a 178-120 record, including
an outstanding 26-2 record and a number 13 national ranking last
season. In 2000-01, Martre guided the Lady Saluqis to a 22-9 record
and a trip to the NJCAA Tournament, the team's first national
tournament appearance since 1990. The 2000-01 team also won the
TJCCAA/Region VII Tournament, after finishing as West Division
runner-up during the regular season. Martre has turned the Lady
Saluqis into one of the hardest working and tenacious teams in not
only the state of Tennessee, but the entire country.
In her tenure at Southwest, Martre has been selected TJCCAA Coach of
the Year three times (including 2007) and Region VII Coach of the
Year once. Twenty-five of Martre's players have earned All-West
Division honors and fourteen have made the All-TJCCAA team. In
addition, she has coached three All-Americans (Myquita Mackey, Amie
Williams, and Ashley Shields) and one academic All-American (Torre
Thomas).
Martre has been able to bring in young women with the talent to not
only run her intricate system, but also be dedicated
student-athletes who have enhanced the Southwest Tennessee
reputation for developing the whole person. More than 85 percent of
her players have earned a degree from Southwest or transferred to
another college or university to continue their education.
A native of Memphis, Martre is a 1985 graduate of Fairley High
School, where she was named team MVP and all-district. At Shelby
State, Andrea started at guard for coach Herbert Wright, and helped
lead the Lady Saluqis to a 27-5 record and a national tournament
appearance in 1986-87. Andrea still holds the Lady Saluqis' career
record for steals with 184. After Shelby State, she transferred to
Edinboro University, where she was a standout guard for two seasons.
Martre held the school and state record for assists in a single
season with 238 from 1990-2005. She was also named to Edinboro’s
All-Time Women’s Basketball Team in June, 2007.
Martre is a single mother, with one daughter, Monique McConnell (age
15).
