head coach and pitching coach for four seasons. Ray has led the
Saluqis to a 69-49 record in two seasons, including a school-record 40 wins and the Region VII
Tournament championship in 2004. Ray was named the Tennessee
Junior College Coach of the Year by the Tennessee Baseball Coaches
Association in 2004. He has coached the Dulin's Sports Academy team in the Stan
Musial League from 2003-2005, and helped guide them to the
regular season and tournament championships. Ray previously coached the
Shelby County Dawgs summer league team in 2000, guiding them to the Stan
Musial League regular season title. He has also coached at Marshall
Academy in Holly Springs, Mississippi, and served as a pitching
instructor at Dulin’s Sports Academy in Memphis. Ray played five
seasons in the Cincinnati Reds organization as a pitcher, reaching the
AA level for the Chattanooga Lookouts in 1992-93. He had a career record
of 48-29, and led the Reds farm system with 16 wins while playing for
the Charleston (WV) Wheelers in 1991. He was the starting and winning
pitcher in the final and deciding game of the 1992 Midwest League
Championship Series, striking out 13 batters over nine innings in a 4-0
win. Ray signed with Cincinnati as a free agent on June 14, 1989 after
playing two seasons at Delta State University, and two seasons at
Northwest Mississippi Community College. He went 7-1 and was named
honorable mention all-state his freshman season at Northwest. He led the
Rangers to a 44-6 record and a #1 national ranking for most of the
season. Ray has played for the semi-pro Memphis Royals for eleven seasons,
compiling a 53-11 career record. He is a three-time recipient of the
Stan Musial League Pitcher of the Year award and set the Royals’
single season record with 13 wins in 1999. Ray was a five-sport
letterman at Marshall Academy in Holly Springs, Mississippi, where he
played in the Mississippi Academy All-Star Game following his senior
year. He garnered all-conference honors in baseball, basketball, and
football, and won the MPSA state 800 meter run in track as a senior. Ray
is married to the former Leah Young, and they have a daughter (Alexis,
age 15), and a son (John Wesley, age 11).
