2006-2007 SOUTHWEST MEN'S BASKETBALL

With three starters back and a host of transfers and freshmen, the outlook has to be bright for the 2006-2007 Saluqis’ team!

Returning off last year’s Region VII championship team are 6’8” forward Greg Grimes (9.5 points, 5.9 rebounds), 6’8” forward Chris Evans (7.5 points, 5.6 rebounds), 6’4” guard Nathan Walton (3.7 points, 3.5 assists), 6’3” guard/forward Donald Boone (9.2 points, 4.8 rebounds), and 6’1” guard Mark Hudson (1.1 points).

“These players have the experience of winning the region tournament and participating in the national tournament and should be hungry for more,” said Southwest Head Coach Verties Sails Jr.

Coming off red-shirt seasons are 5’10” sophomore guard James Hooper (5.4 points, 3.0 assists in 2004-05), 6’5” freshman swingman Greg Walker (Overton High School), and 6’0” freshman guard Antonio Young (Westwood High School).

Sophomore transfers to the Saluqi program are 6’3” guard Dontae Figgs (Clarendon College), 6’4” guard Dominique Johnson (St. Clair County Community College), 6’7” forward Donnell Maben (Connors State College), and 6’7” forward Leon Martin (Vincennes University).

Heading an outstanding freshman class are 6’8” center Deante Burgess (Detroit King High School), 5’11” guard Emmanuel Cheers (Marion High School), 6’9” center David Evans (Oakhaven High School), 6’4” guard Ervin Herron (Lighthouse Christian Academy), 6’1” guard Stanley McNeil (Treadwell High School), 6’5” forward Alvin “A.J.” Nance (Marion High School), and 5’10” guard Marcus Prewitt.

“This could be the most athletic team that we’ve had at Southwest,” said Sails. “It will be a challenge to the coaching staff to put the pieces of the puzzle together.”

This year’s non-conference schedule features Coahoma, Arkansas Baptist and Shorter. Southwest will also compete in two tournaments – the Collegiate Sports Travel Classic in Pensacola, Florida and the Saluqis Classic which includes Cincinnati State, Howard (TX), and Genesis One Christian Academy.

The TJCCAA will return to an Eastern and Western Division schedule in 2006-2007. Southwest will play Eastern Division schools Roane State, Walters State, Chattanooga State, Motlow State, Cleveland State, and Hiwassee once each and Western Division opponents Jackson State, Volunteer State, Saint Catharine, Columbia State, and Dyersburg State twice. The 2007 TJCCAA/NJCAA Region VII Tournament will be held March 6-11 at Volunteer State in Gallatin, Tennessee.
