Saluqis Defeat Chattanooga and Cleveland to Open TCCAA Play, Coach Nichols Wins 100th Game at Southwest

The Southwest men's baskeball team opened conference play over the weekend at the Verties Sails Gymnasium, defeating both Chattanooga State (87-76) and Cleveland State (78-55) to improve to 4-0 on the season. The wins gave Saluqis' Head Coach Jerry Nichols 100 wins at Southwest (in just four games into his fifth season!) His overall coaching record now stands at 180-54 including 100-23 at Southwest.

Carlos Marshall scored 19 points and Michael Littlejohn had 16 points including four three-pointers to lead the Saluqis past Chattanooga State. Leading by just two points at the half (44-42), Southwest outscored the Tigers 43-34 after intermission as Marshall and Littlejohn combined for 21 of the Saluqis' points and the Southwest defense limited Chatt State to just 28 percent field goal shooting. Southwest had strong play from its reserves with 39 points off the bench led by Xavier Davenport's (11) and Malik Anderson (8).

Littlejohn also led the team in scoring in the win over Cleveland State with 16 points including four goals from behind the arc. Marshall added nine points and a team-high four assists while Trey Dawkins and Shakem Johnson had eight points each (both on 4/5 shooting)

Johnson also led the team with six rebounds. As a team, Southwest shot 55.6 percent from the field in luding 60 percent in the second half. Top scorers off the bench were Martavius Wilson (6 points on 3/3 shooting) and Khalil Spencer (6 points on 3/4) and Davenport (6 points on 3/5).
